Taking family photos on your wedding day doesn’t have to be stressful, I promise! But let’s face it, it can get tricky if you’re not prepared. You don’t want anyone messing with your portrait time or running off to find Grandma during cocktail hour! But don’t worry – with a solid family photo list, it’s a breeze! I’ve put together this blog post to show you exactly how to create one for your big day. Let’s make those photos easy and fun!

Step 1.

Preparing Your Questionnaire

About 1-2 months before the wedding, I send a questionnaire to gather key details, including the family photo list. I ask couples to include everyone’s first name and relationship to avoid awkward moments and make the process smoother. While I love candid shots, those family photos are the ones mom and dad will cherish forever!

Step 2.

Keep Time and Value in Mind

When creating your family photo list and timeline, each shot takes about 90-120 seconds, so I recommend setting aside 20-30 minutes after the ceremony—or even better, before it! Stick to immediate family for quicker photos, and save extended family for the reception. Since they often wander off to cocktail hour, it’ll save you time! If you want a shot with cousins or an aunt, just give them a heads-up beforehand!

Step 3.

Here is an example check list for for how to make your family photo list:

Partner A’s Family Photo List

  • Partner A and mom
  • Partner A and dad
  • Partner A with mom and dad
  • Partner A with siblings
  • Mom and dad

Partner B’s Family Photo List

  • Partner B and mom
  • Partner B and dad
  • Partner B with mom and dad
  • Partner B with siblings
  • Mom and dad

Combined Family photos

  • Couple with Partner A’s parents
  • Couple with Partner A’s parents and siblings
  • Couple with Partner A’s siblings
  • Couple with Partner A’s grandparents
  • Couple with Partner B’s parents
  • Couple with Partner B’s parents and siblings
  • Couple with Partner B’s siblings

Small edits can be made to a combination list like this one. Just remember additional combinations that won’t be hanging on your wall for 10+ years can be taken more casually at cocktail hour or your reception. Just let me know their names or what the grouping is and we will make it happen!
